About the image: The original Balboa Park ~ Centennial Tribute painting is over 7.5 ft in width and over 5 ft tall. The original Masterwork features many of the signature landmarks of the park. In this image we are crossing over the bridge that goes over the famous Lily Pond, the historic Botanical Building is on the right with the landmark California Tower and Dome in the distance.
This is one of 3 different images that have been created from the original painting that took a year to complete.
All of these historic structures, The Botanical Building, The California Tower and Dome as well as The Lily Pond that this bridge is so beautifully crossing over were built for the 1915-1016 Panama-California Exposition. The Botanical Building remains one of the largest lath structures in the world.
The California Tower is an icon of San Diego that can be seen for miles around and is said to be an architectural hybrid that combines many different architectural styles from Gothic details to the Baroque. The Dome is a crowd pleaser with its statement beautifully patterned tile work.
I enjoyed many trips to the park for reference photos of this area from architectural details to the different trees, bushes and shrubs one might see near the Botanical Building.
I shared while writing a description of one of the other images that when I first returned to the park after I had completed this large commissioned work that had taken me so many long hours over an entire year to paint, I was unexpectedly overcome with emotion and found myself wiping away the tears. I hadn't realized how much of oneself an artist can put in to certain works. It is a moment I will not forget.
